Presentation | Parks
Bar-le-Duc pays great attention to the living environment, hence the great efforts have been made to smarten up the city, especially through clumps of flowers.
The city was awarded a third flower at the "concours régional des villes fleuries" (the French national competition that rewards the most flourished towns) for the work of its gardening department. This department is made up of 26 agents who aim at highlighting Bar-le-Duc by floral displays.
Flowers and plants are grown on the spot in a production centre, whose sheltered ground (polycarbonate and plastic tunnels) raises 2000m².
The style known as nouveau fleurissement has been used as a starting point to create the clumps of flowers. That innovating style consists in a technical work on shapes, colours, textures and fragrances, and thus help to develop parks true to tradition. Parks are numerous in Bar-le-Duc and spread throughout the whole in the city, including three high standards parks in the town centre.

Town Hall Park

This landscape park stretches over a 2-hectare surface area. It was created in 1805 in order to embellish the residence of Marshal Oudinot. Several elements still remain from the original park, such as the panoramic viewpoint on the hillside. Many clumps of flowers decorate it and the colourful atmosphere makes it pleasant to walk in the shade of great trees which are - for some them - as old as the park.

Opening time : everyday

  • Summer : 7.30 a.m./21 p.m.
  • Winter : 7.30 a.m./20 p.m.

Park of Marbeaumont

Like the Town hall park, Marbeaumont Park is also a landscape park, but much more recent. The Varin-Bernier family created it at the time when the Castle of Marbeaumont was built. Many rare plant species are planted there, whose names are written on small identity notices. Thus guided throughout the park, walking in the shade of majestic specimens such as sequoias, lime trees, copper beechs or gingkos could be nothing but pleasant.
There could be found the only specimen of “Faux de Verzy” indexed in the county of Meuse, and this species itself is worth the trip!

Park of Bar-le-Duc’s Museum

The clumps of flowers of this formal garden are bordered with trimmed boxwoods and topiary trimmed yews. The park embellishes the museum and various activities take place there every year during the “Festival RenaissanceS” (Renaissance festivities in the upper city).
